Irish Coastguard Search Continues after a Helicopter Crash

The team at Reach and Rescue send all our thoughts and prayers to the Irish Coastguard team and all the effected families after this tragic event. The huge search for the remaining crew of IRCG helicopter 116 is still underway.

A Major Sea and Air Search for three missing crew members resumes after Captain Dara Fitzpatrick dies hours after she was rescued.

The Irish Navy, RNLI, Police divers and several fishing boats are all involved in the effort to find the three remaining crew members of the tragic coastguard helicopter crash in Ireland.

Captain Dara Fitzpatrick was recovered from the sea in a critical condition by RNLI crew but later lost her life in hospital.

Eugene Clonan the IRCG’s director has described the incident as a very dark day for emergency services.

‘’This was a shock, the helicopter just simply disappeared. Communication was lost. Once communication was lost, an emergency procedure was initiated, a search was immediately initiated,’’ he said.

The Irish coastguard helicopters respond to emergencies at sea, inland waterways, offshore islands and mountains all across the island or Ireland, handling around 2500 marine emergencies annually.

Ms Fitzpatrick was the most senior pilot with CHC which runs the contract to provide search and rescue services in the Republic of Ireland.

‘’She’s been with the company for some 20 years and outside of her work as a pilot she did an enormous amount of work on water safety and was always available to do school visits and just highlight basic water safety,’’ Irish coastguard search and rescue manager, Gerard O’Flynn has said.
